Evans was born in New York City in 1930. He started his career in the mailroom at Columbia Pictures, and quickly worked his way up the ranks. In 1966, he was named head of production at Paramount Pictures, and he quickly made his mark with a string of hit films. Evans was known for his keen eye for talent, and he was instrumental in the careers of many of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Mia Farrow.

Evans's personal life was as dramatic as his professional life. He was married seven times, and he had a reputation for hard partying and womanizing. In 1980, he was convicted of cocaine possession, and he served a brief prison sentence.
