Early Life and Career

Stuart was born in Hangchow, China, to American missionary parents. He graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina and then returned to China to teach at Hangchow Christian College. In 1911, he became president of the college and served in that position until 1927.

During his tenure as president, Stuart oversaw the growth of the college into a major university. He also played a key role in the development of the Chinese educational system. In 1928, he was elected president of the National Christian Council of China, a position he held until 1937.

Diplomatic Career

In 1946, Stuart was appointed US ambassador to China by President Harry Truman. He arrived in China at a time of great turmoil. The Chinese Civil War was raging, and the Chinese Communist Party was gaining ground. Stuart's mission was to mediate between the two sides and help to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Stuart quickly established himself as a skilled diplomat. He was able to build relationships with both the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party. He also played a key role in negotiating the Marshall Plan, which provided economic aid to China.

However, Stuart's efforts to mediate the Chinese Civil War were ultimately unsuccessful. The Chinese Communist Party launched a full-scale offensive in 1949, and the Chinese government was forced to retreat to Taiwan. Stuart returned to the United States in 1949.

Later Life and Legacy

After his return to the United States, Stuart continued to work for peace and reconciliation between China and the United States. He served as chairman of the United States-China People's Friendship Association and was a member of the board of directors of the National Committee on United States-China Relations.

Stuart died in San Francisco in 1962. He is remembered as a great diplomat and educator who made a significant contribution to US-China relations.

Yenching University

One of Stuart's most lasting legacies is Yenching University. He founded the university in 1920 as a Christian university. The university quickly became one of the most prestigious universities in China. It was known for its strong academic programs and its commitment to social justice.

Yenching University was closed by the Chinese government in 1952. However, it was reopened in 2007 as a private university. The university continues to be a leading institution of higher education in China.

John Leighton Stuart was a remarkable man who made a significant contribution to US-China relations and to the development of education in China. He was a skilled diplomat and a dedicated educator. His legacy continues to inspire people today.
