Cotton was born in 1893 in San Francisco, California. She was an avid hiker and mountaineer from a young age, and she quickly became fascinated with Yosemite's towering cliffs and granite domes.
In 1915, Cotton began spending summers in Yosemite, where she climbed some of the park's most challenging peaks. She was often accompanied by her friend and fellow mountaineer, Ansel Adams. Adams was a renowned photographer, and his images of Cotton climbing in Yosemite are some of the most iconic photographs of the early 20th century.
Cotton's climbing exploits were not without their risks. In 1916, she fell 50 feet while climbing Half Dome. She survived the fall, but she was badly injured. Undeterred, she continued to climb in Yosemite for many years.
Cotton's story is an inspiring one. She was a pioneer in women's mountaineering, and she helped to pave the way for future generations of female climbers. Cliffs and Challenges is a fascinating account of her adventures in Yosemite, and it is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of mountaineering.
