Butfield's stories are based on interviews with people who have had experiences with animals who have passed away. These experiences include everything from seeing the animal's spirit to hearing their voice to feeling their presence. Butfield's stories are both comforting and inspiring, and they offer a glimpse into the possibility that our animals are still with us, even after they are gone.
Here is an excerpt from one of the stories in And Other Animals:
I was sitting in my living room, reading a book, when I suddenly felt a warm presence next to me. I looked up and saw my dog, Buddy, who had passed away a few months earlier. He was wagging his tail and looking at me with his big, brown eyes. I couldn't believe it! Buddy was back!
I reached out and touched him, and he licked my hand. He was solid and real. I could feel his fur and his warm breath on my skin. I was so happy to see him again.
Buddy and I spent the next few hours together, talking and playing. It was like he had never been gone. I told him all about what had been going on in my life, and he listened patiently. He wagged his tail and licked my face, and I knew that he was happy to be home.
Eventually, it was time for Buddy to go. He stood up and walked towards the door. I followed him, and we walked out into the backyard together. Buddy stopped at the edge of the yard and looked back at me. He wagged his tail and licked my hand one last time. Then he turned and ran off into the darkness.
I stood there for a long time, watching Buddy go. I knew that I would never see him again in this life, but I also knew that he would always be with me in my heart.
And Other Animals is a beautiful and heartwarming book that will touch the hearts of anyone who has ever loved an animal. Butfield's stories are a reminder that our animals are always with us, even after they are gone.
